Escape from Pretoria (2020)

In 1978, Tim Jenkin and Stephen Lee, white South Africans and anti-apartheid activists, are arrested and imprisoned in Pretoria Prison. Despite discouragement, they plan an escape with fellow prisoner Leonard Fontaine, crafting wooden keys for their cells and other locks. Their daring escape involves evading guards and utilizing a power outage for cover, finally fleeing Pretoria with the help of a taxi. This act further fuels their commitment to the anti-apartheid cause, leading to their eventual pardoning in 1991, a year before apartheid’s end.

While the film succeeds in creating suspenseful moments, some critics note a lack of depth in exploring the broader context of apartheid. However, the detailed portrayal of the escape plan and the prisoners’ ingenuity provides a captivating watch. Despite its few shortcomings, the film presents a thrilling narrative that keeps the audience engaged till the very end.
