On a fall night in 2003, Harvard University sophomore Mark Zuckerberg, feeling spurned by a breakup, creates a campus website to rate the attractiveness of female students. The site, Facemash, garners overwhelming attention, leading to academic probation for Zuckerberg. This event, however, sparks the inception of a new idea: a social networking site exclusive to Ivy League students, initially funded by Eduardo Saverin. Thefacebook quickly expands beyond Harvard, attracting the interest and eventual partnership of Napster co-founder Sean Parker. As Facebook’s reach grows, so do the complications, leading to legal battles with those who felt their contributions were overlooked or their ideas appropriated, including the Winklevoss twins and Saverin himself.
