In 18th century Denmark, Captain Ludvig Kahlen, an ambitious but impoverished war hero, strives to cultivate the harsh Danish heath. Seeking to gain a noble title, he starts farming and building a colony for the king. The area, however, is ruled by the merciless nobleman Frederik De Schinkel who sees Kahlen as a threat. Amidst this backdrop, Kahlen, with the help of a fled couple, begins forming a community, setting the stage for a dramatic clash with De Schinkel.
